A Necklace for My Beloved (Samkauli satrposatvis) is a 1971 lyrical comedy by legendary Georgian director, Tengiz Abuladze. It is based on the Ahmedkhan Abu Bakar story, “Necklace for my Serminaz.”

The movie is set in the villages of Dagestan, a beautiful republic in the Caucasus. Three young men are all in love with the beautiful, blue-eyed Serminaz. According to Dagestani tradition, they must present a special gift to the girl to win her hand in marriage. Their journey to love changes them all on their way and also brings together the feuding villages from which they hail.

A Necklace for My Beloved is a subtle, elegant movie. Unlike many of Tengiz Abuladze’s other works, it contains little politics. To watch this movie today should really be just for entertainment. Perhaps, though, watching it also gives a window into Abuladze’s mind as he takes a brief break from the meticulous censorship he was often up against.
